How to pray when there is no time?
Now, stories are perceived as a wonder that prayer was central to a person’s life. Today it turns out this way: family, work, cleaning, washing, cooking ... One fuss, no time to pray ... Seraphim of Sarovsky suggests a way out of this situation.
Appeal to God is not measured by volume
First, you need to understand that prayer is not some kind of gibberish written in the prayer book. This is an appeal to God. It is possible to talk with the Lord both with words from the prayer book and with those prompted by the heart. You can read out loud or in your mind. Those who reach the highest degrees of prayer know: they don’t need words either.
Secondly, God hears us regardless of climatic conditions, geographical coordinates, loudness of sound in decibels and the speed of pronunciation in hundreds of words. Also, God does not measure the effectiveness of our prayer by the number of pages read from the prayer book. You can run through the eyes of the half book, but never pray.
Among Orthodox Christians, it is customary to read daily the morning and evening rule, usually one kathisma from the Psalms and a chapter from the Gospel. Also, reading akathists or canons, the creation of the Rule of God and the Jesus prayer will not interfere at all.
But many modern people simply do not have the opportunity to do all this in silence and solitude. Especially if you have a family and three small children, noisy colleagues and a half hour in a crowded trolley bus on the way to work. How to be? You cannot get a prayer book, you cannot read an akathist ...
Simple rule with deep meaning
Seraphim of Sarovskiy points out the particular importance of the three prayers: “Our Father,” “The Virgin Mother of God,” and “I Believe.” The first is granted to people from the Lord himself, the second is the conversion of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, and the second indicates our involvement in Orthodoxy and acceptance of his teachings.
Therefore, the saint offers such a special rule for those who really do not have time to pray. It is necessary in the morning and before bedtime to read three times "Our Father" and "Our Lady the Virgin" and once "Symbol of Faith".
In addition, it is possible to create a prayer even when you are traveling in transport, going to work, preparing dinner, and so on. St. Seraphim of Sarov advises this: before dinner, read the Jesus prayer to yourself with a very simple text: It is possible with just two words: "Lord, have mercy." This is the first part of the rule of Seraphim of Sarov.
This will not distract you from your duties at all. On the contrary, it will help not to disperse attention to unnecessary details. If before you went to the bus and condemned the woman in front of a tasteless outfit, then today you simply do not see it. You also need to ensure that the creation of prayer does not resemble the repetition of mantras. You turn to God - you should always remember this.
From lunch to evening, Seraphim of Sarov proposes to appeal not only to Christ, but also to His Mother:
If you have such an approach to prayer — read the rule of Seraphim of Sarov — and sincerely turn to the Lord, it turns out that prayer is a time in your life and you constantly remember God. Of course, there will be moments when you are distracted by people or external circumstances, but you still go back to talking with God.
According to the saint, the creation of such a prayer helps a person to improve spiritually. If before it seemed to you that there is no time to pray, now you understand that you have the whole day for this. But it takes a lot of effort and sincere appeal to God to make this rule an integral part of your day.
