Prehistory of one photo
Found a photo in the network. Smiled the thought that this is probably "Famen" .. the beginning ... On the other hand, the event is clearly not joyful and did not happen in Ukraine. Rummaged and found what it was and where it happened.
As it turned out, it was (most likely) a protest action against the oath of Canada by the Russian "Dukhobor pacifists" (spiritual Christians) in 1957. These people had their own view of religion and lived in Russia on the territory of modern Ukraine. The founder of the Dukhobor community is considered to be the Cossack Silouan Kolesnikov from the Ekaterinoslav Province (now the Dnipropetrovsk region).
Some sociologists often qualify as a Christian denomination, rejecting the external rituals of the church. Ideologically close to the English Quakers.
They lived in large communes - "the world". Manage your board of the most intelligent and respected. Private property, but there is a common fund of grain and food. If your crop fails, "peace" will help.
In Russia, they were not touched for a long time, until life forced. They especially honored Alexander I, who in 1820 released them from the oath to the state. But the following emperors began the persecution of the Dukhobors and they themselves served as the cause. The authorities sent them weapons to protect against enemies, and they ... no, to return, or quietly put in sheds and forget ... took and burned him publicly in protest against violence and military service.

Then they were taken seriously. And they began to slowly squeeze. I had to accept official Christianity or move to the Caucasus. It was not sweet. They're pacifists. Caucasians were constantly abducted women (understandably for what), and men were taken into slavery. But there, too, they eventually adapted.
By the way, it was from this sect that Ahimas Velde came, a professional assassin of the highest class, who cut the collegiate registrar Erast Petrovich Fandorin in the first book and organized the “natural demise” of the celebrated commander of the “Russian Achilles”, the hero of Pleven - Mikhail Sobolev.
They were sympathetic to many figures, including Leo Tolstoy, who even pledged to pay the Dukhobors fees from showing their theater plays.According to some reports, the operation to resettle several thousand Dukhobors to Canada (where there are no Caucasians) was carried out with money from the novel “Resurrection” by Tolstoy.
The second batch of Dukhobors crossed the steamer "Lake Superior".
The first batch of Russian immigrants from the sect of Dukhobor pacifists landed in the Canadian port of Halifax on January 20, 1899.

In Canada, the Dukhobors also had a hard time. Initially, they were given land in Saskatchewan. But when the Canadian government demanded an oath of allegiance to Canada, many Dukhobors opposed this. It even reached the "bare" protests. Due to the confiscation of land, the Dukhobors moved to the province of British Columbia.

Now about 30 thousand descendants of Dukhobor pacifists live in Canada. The remains live in some areas of Russia and Georgia. On the territory of modern Azerbaijan, the deported Dukhobors founded several settlements, which until now have Russian names: Slavyanka, Ivanovka, Novosaratovka and Novoivanovka.

The Dukhobor writings did not survive, as they did not recognize the "dead word." They denied the original sin - - "in itself is sinful and saved." They believed in the rebirth of the soul, like Hindus - “after death, the soul of a pious person goes into the body of a newborn, and the soul of a wicked one into an animal.” They confessed only to God, did not recognize the sacraments of marriage and external differences between people. Avoid all vows, including - the state. The ritualism and the official Church were denied - "The Church is not in logs, but in ribs" ... "God himself dwells in man’s soul. God exists in nature sensually, but spiritually in man’s soul" ... They did not recognize the icons - "I worship Christ is not a daub, not a written one, but a life-giving Christ. "
