Pride and pride have one root

What is the difference between pride and pride? This question is answered differently. For example, psychologists endow a sense of pride with a positive quality (self-esteem), and pride with a negative quality (exalting oneself over others). Many even claim that pride helps a person to become happy: they say, it gives rise to joyful emotions and feelings - pride in personal accomplishments, your son or daughter, your Fatherland, etc.

Based on such opinions, a very interesting conclusion suggests itself: it turns out that pride is a kind of (firm, positive) reliance on strong qualities or sides, and pride is a kind of negative pride, that is, pride without a reason. At first glance, this approach is reminiscent of the banal comparison between the two types of envy - white (good) and black (bad). And the second?

To begin with, we will ask philologists: what is the difference between pride and pride? If you look into the dictionaries of Ozhegov and Ushakov, you can see that pride is an inordinate pride. And in the Abramov dictionary the words “pride” and “pride” are synonymous and are in the same row with other “brothers in meaning”: arrogance, arrogance, arrogance, arrogance, vanity, arrogance ...

In fact, we are talking about the same flaw (albeit with different shades of negativism). Obviously, in this case, one should be guided by the wise phrase of Kozma Prutkov, who advised to see the root. How not cool, but the words "pride" and "pride" are one-root: their root is the same ("proud").

Of course, for believers, a biblical answer to the question is more authoritative: why is pride different from pride? It turns out, from the point of view of Scripture, both of these feelings are identical (sinful). For example, the Old Testament prophet Isaiah says that “pride is cast down into the grave” (of the sinner).

The same approach is in the New Testament: God opposes the proud, and He gives grace to the humble (the apostles James and Peter speak of this in their epistles). And the Evangelist John reports that everyday pride does not come from the Father, but from this world.

According to the patristic view, pride and pride are almost the same. After all, we are talking about the same flaw, which refers both to the number of twenty ordeals (which the soul must pass after death), and to the number of the eight major sins set forth in the works of the early Christian writer Evagrius of Pontus. According to theologians, pride is the first sin that, at the suggestion of Satan, appeared in the world before the creation of man.

Based on the above, each of us must answer the question: what is the difference between pride and pride? Is this a harmless feeling of joy for some success, a desire to preserve its dignity (honor) or is it an attempt to exalt oneself over others?
