Spies around

May 19, 2018

In 1918, matters on the Mexican – American border were not the glory of God. Firstly, the Mexican Revolution affected. Secondly, the raids of Pancho Villa. Third, hundreds of thousands of American soldiers were not in the United States, but in Europe, where they fought on the First World War. And fourth, the American spies knew that the German spies offered Mexico an alliance if Mexico attacked the United States. Kaiser promised Mexico to give up previously lost territories - Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. The only reason why Mexico did not accept this proposal was that Mexican spies feared that American spies were acting as German spies for the purpose of provocation.

On August 27, the Mexican carpenter Zerefino Lamadrid crossed the US – Mexican border in the town of Nogales, half of which lay in Arizona, USA, and the second in Sonora state, Mexico. The US border guard suspected the carpenter of spying, and therefore ordered him to stop. The Mexicans, also suspecting him of espionage, were ordered to go on.Lost in conflicting instructions, Lamadrid stopped, not knowing what to do. Then one of the Americans raised a rifle, to which the Mexicans reacted by shooting.

The Mexican federal troops and the 35th infantry battalion and the 10th cavalry rushed from the US to the place of the shootout. The shootout threatened to turn into a war. The militia joined the militia from both sides, and the whole city was already on fire. And the city ran the mayor Felix Penaloza with a white flag and begged to stop shooting. Until he was shot. After four hours of battle, the Mexicans surrendered.

The victims of the battle were six American soldiers and two militiamen. From the side of Mexico - 15 soldiers and an unknown number of militias. In order to prevent similar incidents, a wall was built across the entire city, like through Berlin.

But the most interesting thing began when investigating the incident. The Americans blamed the Mexicans, and the Mexicans blamed the Americans. Finally, the parties agreed that the shootout was the result of provocative actions by German spies.
