The United States has submitted a report on human rights. Guess who are the main violators?

The United States specifically singled out China, Russia, Iran and North Korea for human rights violations in the report, designating their governments as “instability forces”, in their annual report to the UN, on human rights, published Friday.

Commenting on the State Department’s global human rights report for 2017, Acting Secretary of State John Sullivan also criticized the governments of Syria, Turkey, Myanmar and Venezuela for numerous human rights violations.

The State Department report is considered to be the most comprehensive presentation of the global human rights situation, covering about 200 countries and territories.

“States that restrict freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, which allow and perpetrate violence against members of religious, ethnic and other minorities or undermine the fundamental dignity of the people, are morally reprehensible and undermine our interests, ”said Sullivan in the preface of the report.

Critics in the United States, such as Amnesty International, have blamed Trump for not using human rights abuses too heavily as foreign policy pressure on authoritarian leaders in Russia, the Philippines, and the Middle East. Instead, Trump himself often criticizes the American media for their position.

Michael Kozak, a senior State Department official who oversaw the report, said he doesn’t believe that President Donald Trump’s administration policy on the freedom of the press, refugees, lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people, as well as other issues, allows the US to blame hypocrisy to them.

China

The report describes China as an authoritarian state in which the government is responsible for arbitrary detention, torture and execution without due process, among other human rights violations. Significant restrictions on freedom of speech, press, assembly, religion, and various movements, as well as repressive practices against the Muslim Uygur minority and Tibetans, are noted.

Russia

The report speaks of the deterioration of human rights in the east of Ukraine, where Moscow supports the rebels and annexes the Crimea belonging to Ukraine. State violence against LGBTI persons in Chechnya has also been criticized. The most significant human rights issues in Russia include “extrajudicial” executions, “systematic” torture, arbitrary arrests and detentions, and a lack of independence of the judiciary and political prisoners. Also noted are restrictions on freedom of expression and media.

North Korea

The report states that the North Korean government carried out "flagrant violations of human rights" in almost all categories. Extrajudicial executions, torture, political prisoners, forced labor and many other restrictions in every aspect of life were emphasized.

Syria

The report speaks of the human rights situation in Syria as “terrifying.” The government has committed numerous "atrocities", the use of chemical weapons, including sarin and chlorine, against civilians, large-scale bombing of civilians and residential areas, attacks on medical facilities, extrajudicial executions, rape, including of children, massacres, famine and forced displacement of local civilians, mass enforced disappearances, thousands of cases of torture, and many other violations.

Myanmar

“Ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya minority in Rakhine State during the year,” the report says. In addition to the atrocities in Rakhine State, significant human rights violations include arbitrary arrest, unlawful killings, politically motivated arrests and restrictions on the media, including the arrest of journalists.

Turkey

The report noted with concern the detention of tens of thousands of people, including parliamentarians and journalists, in a state of emergency after an unsuccessful military coup in 2016. The most significant violations of human rights include alleged torture, enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrest and detention, “executive interference with the independence of the judiciary” is noted.

Venezuela

The report says that "democratic governance and human rights in Venezuela have deteriorated sharply over the course of the year as a result of the campaign of the Maduro administration, to strengthen its power."The executive branch is increasingly authoritarian and "exercises considerable control over the legislative, judicial, civil and electoral branches of power."
