Why do they pray to John of Kronstadt during alcoholism?

For many, canonized saints are associated either with apostles, or with active missionaries in Africa or Asia, or with ascetic monks who spent their lives in solitude and unceasing prayer. But among these representations stands out in contrast with the holy shepherd, revered in the Orthodox Church - John of Kronstadt, one of the days of whose memory the Church celebrates on June 14.

Icon of John of Kronstadt

In his biography the active religious, civil and social position, communication with beggars and top officials of the state, internal feats and external “pomp” are closely intertwined. But despite such contrasts, the righteous John was indeed a man of God and led a life in Christ.

The future shepherd was born in 1829 in one of the villages of the Arkhangelsk province. His father - Ilya Sergiev - throughout his life served as a deacon at the temple. Maternal grandfather was also a clerk. And on the paternal side, all grandfathers and great-grandfathers were priests for at least 350 years. So religion and education in the faith were an integral part of family life.

John was the first child and he was born very weak. Parents, worrying about their son, decided to immediately commit the baptism, even without a priest. They were afraid that the child would not die unbaptized. But after performing the Sacrament, the baby really began to recover.

So for the first time, apparently, the grace of the Holy Spirit manifested itself, not leaving him throughout his life.

Why do John of Kronstadt pray for students?

When the boy was six years old, his father taught him to read. True, the letter was given to the child with difficulty. In children's faith and simplicity, he began to ask God for help. And then it became easier to study.

Although the family lived very poorly, but the father decided to give his son an education and gave him to the Archangel Parish School. The future shepherd himself remembers how hard it was for him then.

Relatives were not around, they did not have enough support and strength to absorb the amount of information. He saw only one way out of this situation - to pray fervently.

Students before the session, trimming the thresholds of the temple and crowding at the candlesticks, will be easier to understand the state of the future saint. He prayed with all his might, with all his heart, and realized that only God could help.

As righteous John of Kronstadt recalls, during one of these hot prayers, he felt an answer from above: "... just like the curtain fell from my eyes, as if the mind had opened in my head."

So the young man managed to finish the parish school, and then one of the first - the Archangel Theological Seminary, and then enter the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

Thanks to these facts from the biography of the righteous John is revered among the believers as an assistant and patron of the students. Parents address him in prayers for their children, as well as the children themselves, who face learning difficulties.

John of Kronstadt helps the poor, the needy, the dependent

But besides the prayer help of students, people who are in difficult life circumstances also turn to the saint. These are the poor, the unemployed, the representatives of dysfunctional families, and the dependent ...

Even in our time, many societies of sobriety bear his name. How does this relate to the life of a shepherd? We will understand in order.

In 1855, while studying at the Academy, John of Kronstadt had a prophetic dream - he served in priestly vestments in Kronstadt.

And so it happened: in a couple of days he was offered to become engaged to Elizabeth, the daughter of the abbot of Kronstadt Cathedral. But even in marriage, the life of Father John was more reminiscent of the monastic: he and his wife made a vow of virginity, raising as their children two nieces Elizabeth.

Around this time, the ministry of Father John begins. But not only priestly. In addition to the unceasing prayer, the daily Liturgy, the priest actively communicated and helped many in need.

The fact that he was no longer paid a salary at some time testifies to the degree of his help. The wife received money and any help, since the father distributed everything to the poor.

Righteous John of Kronstadt teaches alcohol addicts

He talked and wisely instructed the sufferers of drunkenness. In the descriptions of the life of the saint there are several stories about how alcoholics got rid of their bad habit after a brief conversation or just a meeting with the shepherd.

As many eyewitnesses testify, Father John had bright blue eyes and an insightful look. To recover from drunkenness, one man had only enough of a bottomless look and a question: “Why do you, darling, drink?”.

The priest came home to the second patient with the same ailment in order to console his relatives and sensitize the addict. It must be said that the alcoholic's wife had a hard time: while her husband drank away all his earnings, she took care of the food of two children.
The Kronstadt shepherd found a special approach to the patient. Suffering from alcoholism, the man had enough eyes and spiritual conversation to stop drinking and change lifestyle.

Prayer for deliverance from alcoholism

In modern Orthodox prayer books one can find such a prayer of holy righteous John of Kronstadt for deliverance from the ailment of drunkenness:

O Lord, consider mercifully upon Thy servant (name), deceived by the flattery of the belly and carnal merriment. Give him (the name) to know the sweetness of temperance in fasting and the fruits of the Spirit that flow from it. Amen

But not only the family of drunks was consoled by the righteous John of Kronstadt. He helped single mothers — sometimes he would even nurse with children, share food and clothing with beggars. The priest directly fulfilled the commandment of the last shirt. Therefore, according to the testimony of biographers, sometimes the shepherd even came home barefoot.

In addition, a living example of a priest led others to charity. Many wealthy people brought or sent to the father money and other means. The priest, with God's help, knew to whom they should be given. The problems of poverty and misery were familiar to him from childhood, so the future saint knew them from the inside. He tried not only to help the needy once, but also to solve the problem fundamentally.

House of diligence and assistance to the poor

In 1874, thanks to the initiative of John of Kronstadt, the “Guardianship of the Poor” appears. It took care of three thousand people deprived of material means for life. Then, with the help of a priest, a free school was opened, where children of different faiths could receive education and relevant skills.

And in 1882 another dream of Father John came true - the House of industriousness opened, where those who had to stand with an outstretched hand could earn money for food. There were various workshops where you could earn and learn. Then, at the House of Diligence, the people's canteen and overnight shelter opened. The payment system in them was such that everyone in need could earn their own shelter and food.

But the charitable activities of the righteous John of Kronstadt were not limited to this. In the testimony of his amazing help you can find stories aboutthat the priest sometimes received sealed envelopes with money and in a few minutes gave them to the needy, without recounting. As it turned out, the applicant received exactly the amount that he did not have for the operation, treatment, housing, food.

Internal feats and external pomp

The life of John of Kronstadt is interesting to many contemporaries, since it does not look like a well-written plot with an ideal hero in the lead role.

Why did the priest ride in an expensive carriage and wear a sable fur coat?

We see in front of us not a sinless priest in a tattered robe or a run-down monk in an old cassock, but a shepherd in expensive clothes who travel around the city in an expensive carriage.
His food is not similar to the food of the fasting, eating only crackers and water. His social circle is not limited to the poor and beggars. He is invited to rich houses to serve prayers and to commune with the dying Emperor Alexander III.

And he does not refuse. But he does this not for the sake of vanity, but by humility.

John of Kronstadt with chalice

Imagine this situation: the doctor cures a seriously ill patient. Relatives for joy do not know how to thank him. And if, through the prayer of righteous John of Kronstadt, many received relief and recovery? Didn't they want to give something to their beloved father?

Out of gratitude, some brought money, others brought valuable presents, and others brought sable fur. If you refuse this, then the person may be offended. Therefore, the priest humbly accepted such gratitude.

He did not try to push out his “righteousness,” so he was apparently not distinguished by postnic deeds. If there was no fasting, I ate fish food. In his diary there is evidence that the father had problems with the digestive tract. Therefore, he had to eat dairy products. He did not eat meat, but he ate chicken broth for the sake of humility.

But behind such a seemingly "magnificent" life, spiritual asceticism is hidden.

John of Kronstadt: a life of prayer and helping others

He slept for 2-3 hours a day, prayed a lot and served the Liturgy, during which he received communion every day. In Lent, those who wanted to confess had so much that he devoted this sacrament 10 (!) Hours a day. The confession began after the Liturgy, at about one o'clock in the afternoon, and sometimes lasted until one in the morning. No rest, not even time for lunch. The only thing that Father John could allow himself was 30 minutes to take a ride on the notorious coach and get some fresh air.

If there was no Lent, John of Kronstadt, after the Liturgy, visited the sick in Kronstadt, served prayers at home. Then he went to Petersburg, where he did the same.

"My life in Christ"

At night, he kept his diary in which records appeared about God and love, service to his neighbor and all that worried him, up to the denunciation of Leo Tolstoy and misunderstanding of the strategy of the emperor's actions.

Because of such an active position in life and popular love, the priest was envious and detractors. Therefore, in his biography, one can find criticism from the side of higher authorities. Some called him a saint, others - an actor playing in public. But whatever opinions people share, the other is important. God accepted his ministry. The most famous work of John of Kronstadt is called "My Life in Christ." And this is really true: the shepherd spent his life with Christ and in Christ.

The relics of John of Kronstadt

In the certificates of his help there are stories about the cure of seriously ill patients, deliverance from alcohol and drug addiction, the birth of long-awaited children, relief in school, help in difficult circumstances, coming to faith. And this is a confirmation of the sincerity of his prayer and ministry.

As in life he did not reject either the poor or the rich who come to him for prayer help, so after death. And John of Kronstadt went away to God on January 2, 1909. According to historical evidence, his funeral was an anomalous phenomenon. Crowds of people stood from the stations in St. Petersburg to the St. John Monastery in Karpovka, where righteous John was buried. Even more modest crowds of people are still gathering at his relics.

Numerous miracles only confirm that sincere prayer to John of Kronstadt does not remain unheard.
