Will there be animals in paradise

Will there be animals in heaven?

Today, perhaps, there are few such families or houses, where no domestic animal would live. Love for animals often takes on unusual forms, transcending the limits of prudence and equating the data of the "household" to family members, which is not at all commendable. However, not only such affection, but also ordinary curiosity raises questions about what awaits all these cats and dogs after death. Is a person destined to meet with them after a general resurrection? To reflect on this topic, we propose to you further.

Do animals have a soul?

To find out whether animals will be in paradise, you first need to find out if they are endowed with a soul. Holy Scripture gives an unequivocal answer to this: yes, endowed. The Book of Genesis mentions this repeatedly:

And God said: Let the earth bring forth the living soul after its kind, cattle, and reptiles, and the beasts of the earth, after their kind. And it became so. ()

This “living soul”, by the way, distinguishes all fauna from the plant world. However, from Scripture, we learn thatthe soul of animals is in their blood() This means that the soul of animals is not endowed with immortality, as in humans, it dies with the body.

The soul of animals is only a set of psycho-emotional properties, thanks to which the animals have the will and memory, the beginnings of intelligence, and also know how to feel. But they do not have the image and likeness of God, they do not have those spiritual and personal qualities like ours. Animals live according to biological laws, they are alien to the concept of morality, the distinction between good and evil.

The death of animals

At the same time, this does not at all mean that the life of our pets is necessarily limited only to their earthly existence. The fact that in heaven there will be a place for animals, we are clearly announced prophetic pictures from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah:

Then the wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard will lie with the goat; and the calf, and the young lion, and the ox will be together, and the little child will lead them. And the cow will feed with the bear, and their young will lie together; and the lion will eat straw like an ox. ()

Apostle Paul also claimed thatthe creature itself will be freed from slavery to corruption in the freedom of the glory of the children of God().

For this perishable one has to put on the incorruption, and this mortal to put on immortality. When perishable this will be clothed in the incorrupt and this mortal will be clothed in immortality, then the word written will come true: death is swallowed up in victory. ()

Hence the conclusion: the animals in paradise will for sure. Together with the transfigured man, they too will acquire some kind of immortal flesh, they will be resurrected. However, how exactly this will happen, and most importantly - whether it will be a personal resurrection of each particular pet - we do not know. On this question there are only some private opinions of theologians, but there is no general view of the Church on it.

For example, there is an opinion that only those animals that have lived and communicated with people will fall into eternity, it is through contact with the immortal soul of their owners that they will be able to overcome corruption. According to another view, the whole created world will change after the Last Judgment as a species. But Nectarios of Optina, a big fan of cats, for example, believed that cats would be the first to enter paradise.

According to Theophan the Recluse, the souls of animals will merge into some one "world soul." But all these are only assumptions, and we cannot know the exact answer.Surely, we only know one thing: “God created all wisdom,” the Lord created, and in this matter he will decide everything wisely and inexpressibly, out of deep love for His creation. We should not be interested in the posthumous fate of pets more than our own.

Animals and man in paradise

The relationship between humans and wildlife

From the above it should be concluded: the place of animals in eternity directly depends on a person. It is necessary to understand that even today the beasts suffer and die because of the corruption of human nature, and not through their fault. The Apostle Paul mentions this in his Epistles:

For the creature with hope awaits the revelation of the sons of God, because the creature submitted to the bustle not voluntarily, but by the will of the one who conquered it ... For we know that the whole creature is collectively groaning and tormented to this day; and not only she, but we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, and we weep within ourselves, awaiting adoption, the redemption of our body. The man was appointed master over the entire created world. This is confirmed by the following fact: God ordered Adam to name all animals. It was a peculiar sign of dominion over them. However, after the fall of the first people, the situation changed. From a harmonious relationship, she moved into one when the beasts even began to attack their master.

It can be assumed that between animals in paradise and man, the same harmonious relationship will resume as before the Fall, as the prophet Isaiah testifies:And the baby will play over the hole of the apse, and the child will extend his hand to the nest of the serpent. They will not do evil or harm in my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. ()

It is known that before the Great Flood, not only people did not eat meat, but there were no predators, all were herbivores. Subsequently, God blessed man to use the meat of certain animals as food.

Rev. Gerasim with a lion

We also know how many saints showed affection and love for animals, even predators, which they felt very well. The lion is well known, who, in gratitude for getting rid of a splinter, has all his life been friends with Rev. Gerasim of Jordan and died of grief next to him on the same day. Together they are even depicted in icons. Another lion dug a grave for St. Mary of Egypt.

St. Seraphim of Sarov and St. Sergius of Radonezh were fed from the hands of bears and other wild animals. From the life of Herman Alaska we also learn how ermines lived next to him. Rev. Brendan the Navigator was always accompanied by a whale. All this testifies to the fact that animals, in the words of priest Konstantin Parkhomenko, “feel the spiritual atmosphere of Paradise,” therefore their posthumous fate cannot remain without committing to eternity.

How to treat pets?

To love their pets, as any animal in general, is certainly necessary, regardless of whether there are animals in paradise or not. This shows the love of man for the whole of God-made world. On the other hand, one can cultivate in oneself compassion for all living things, mercy, responsibility and other positive qualities.

Paisiy Svyatorets stated: there is no other consolation for animals except our love:For animals, man is God. As we ask for help from God, so they ask for help from a person.. However, in this matter it is necessary to exercise elementary prudence. Never forget about the hierarchy established by God. Of the whole created (created) world, animals are certainly closest to man, but they are not the crown of creation.

Tiger sprawled on the couch

Too often, unfortunately, the phenomenon today, when people show unprecedented mercy for the little animals - most often they are interested in their posthumous fate - but at the same time they scornfully treat people, their neighbors. Laughing gently with cats and dogs, they are at the same time true tyrants for their family. It is clear that there is nothing normal in this.

An even more common mistake: when idols or idols are created from pets. People become real koto- or khobovodokhniki instead of being their masters. This is a violation of the second commandment of the Decalogue: Do not make yourself an idol. We will not speak about the same cases when cats or dogs are married or inherited from them. All this is contrary not only to Christian norms, but also to a healthy mind. In short, the love of animals must be prudent, prudent, and chaste.

Is it possible to pray for pets?

At the same time, you can pray for pets. For example, in the case of their illness (but not about the death after death). This also shows the care of man about the whole creature. You can ask in your own words, it is not necessary to look for some special prayer. However, in Orthodoxy there are several saints who are supposed to pray for animals.

Dog licks man

St. George the Victorious, the martyrs Trifon, Blasius, Flor and Laurus — they are mostly asked to recover and preserve agricultural livestock. In some cases it is even possible to sprinkle the living creature with holy water. But it is impossible to give them that kind of water inside, just like a prosphora or any other shrine, because the shrine itself is defiled.

Of course, you can only pray for the health of pets, and not for their repose, regardless of whether there are animals in paradise. And if it can somehow be allowed in the children's prayer, by naivety, then for an adult it will turn out to be at least strange.

Is it a sin to kill animals?

It is clear that killing little animals unnecessarily or for entertainment is a sign of cruelty and composure. Obviously, for any such crime, everyone will have to answer at the Last Judgment. The killing of certain animals for food, we remember, was allowed by God.

A more complicated question: is it possible to put pets to sleep in the event of an incurable disease? There are no canonical rules on this subject, since this tool was invented relatively recently.

Kitten on the step

Most priests are still inclined to believe that it is possible. Since animals are not cleansed through illness or suffering, the soul of animals is not prone to repentance. All this is left to the will of man, he himself can decide whether to put a pet to sleep or not, since it is set by the owner.
